Their main job is to ensure the business operates successfully online, driving customer sales and generating profit through our website; eBay and similar sites; and tying it in with our in-store customer ordering. The department’s also responsible for creating a positive brand image on social media. They manage our presence, including our blog, and engage with customers; recommending books, promoting events and sharing WHSmith’s expertise. Beyond this, Digital’s role is to keep us ahead of the competition in this fast moving area.
With technology and the internet evolving faster than ever, so do our customers’ expectations. The possibilities for delivering what they want in new ways are fantastic and changing all the time. To do this we make the most of available technology and have an entrepreneurial culture: if you have a viable new idea, you’re free to suggest and develop it. The team is fairly small, so it’s agile enough to try new things. However, the business is big enough to provide the investment that’s needed. In short, it’s the best of both worlds: a well-known brand and freedom to shape new offers. This flexibility means jobs in Digital tend to be less defined. As the online world changes, you’ll have every opportunity to shape your role as well as our plans.
While a love of all things digital is clearly a big help, what’s really needed here is solid commercial acumen. We’re keen to hear about new ideas – but also how they’ll work. With our expert team, you’ll have plenty of help to hammer out the details. With this support and a company that’s open to progress, the chance to make your mark is very real indeed.
